ECB would do well to keep rates on hold.

ECB would do well to keep rates on hold. For now.
After yesterdays belated market focus on the underlying problems in managing a single strategy for the whole eurozone, it put into sharp focus the policy options facing the ECB. The west has had a ferocious and deadly enemy for the last 40 years, and it was called inflation. All the ammunition and strategy has been directed towards killing this enemy, and the threat has – for the while – gone away. While this battle has been raging however, a new…

FT lectures Europe on deflation, says ECB should cut rates

The Financial Times is out with an editorial saying the European Central Bank should cut rates next week.
The ECB has done little to stop inflation undershooting its target of close to (but below) 2 per cent. A rate cut in May and a promise to keep monetary policy loose until growth returns was all Frankfurt had to offer. When the ECB’s governing council meets next week, it should immediately cut its policy rate from 0.5 to 0.25 per cent. A new round of cheap loans to the banks – perhaps linked …

Germany aims to issue no new debt from 2015

German finance minister Wolfgang Schaeuble (in an advance copy of an interview with Focus magazine seen on Sunday) said in the Reuter's article:
  • Aims to issue no new debt from 2015

Why Germans Are So Rude?

According to the stereotypes, Germans are first to grab the sunbeds, incapable of cracking a smile and rarely say "thank you".
In an attempt to dispel these myths and to fight back, Germany has launched a series of videos explaining where the misconceptions arise from and how to do business in the country.
Germany is the euro zone's largest economy and the world's second biggest exporter, making it an attractive and important country with which to do business.
The Goethe Institute, Germany's c…

George Soros champions Eurobonds

George Soros is out with his latest commentary. He believes Germany must champion a plan to convert all outstanding European debt into Eurobonds.
Failure to seize this moment would, I believe, lead to the disintegration and eventual collapse of the European Union.
Of course, many countries have lived through nightmares and survived. But the EU is not a country; it is an incomplete association of sovereign states that will not survive a decade or more of stagnation.

Financial transaction tax and a Social democrat coalition

A day that was meant to be another occasion for the forex market to chew its collective fingernails over non- farm payrolls, is now just the end of a week dominated by politics.
The soap opera of US politics rolls on, and the world looks out from behind the sofa, desperately hoping that the story will end well, but after dire warnings about pending financial armageddon, has no further leverage to apply; Berlusconi has created –hopefully- his final piece of mischief making; in the UK we have com…

Syria continues to dominate. Where do we stand now?

United Nations: The inspection team has now arrived on site in Syria after 2 days of delays. Bank Ki-Moon says inspection team “needs time to do its job” in Syria. Whether the US, UK and France will wait for their findings remains to be seen. UN envoy Brahimi says international law is clear that UN Security Council resolution is needed for military action. That hasn’t exactly stopped it previously has it? Also, a UN nuclear watchdog report says Iran has expanded its uranium enrichment program a…
